our first users group meeting tonight…went pretty well, i thought.
home of the original rocket-powered beanie
most of all, we just spent time getting to know each other…kinda getting a feel for the different vibes in the room (well, we were outside at a restaurant…but you know what i mean).
lots of different types of experience and areas of interest among our group, which rocks!
after all…ya can’t make good gumbo without a bunch of different ingredients.
your friendly neighborhood happyfunboy is very VERY stoked!
yeah, that’s right…i used capital letters right there…best mark it on your calendars, kiddies.

why…that’s when said “freebie” not only costs you zip, zero, nada, nothing, zed (for all our visitors from across the water…hi susanne!)…but it also helps you build your business!
so you can imagine my delight that a free for-resale copy of microsoft small business accounting was waiting for me when i arrived at the office today.
now, since i opened it immediately to get rid of the mailing box, i had it in my hands as i was going up to my office.
no less than 1/3 of my firm’s shareholders stopped me and asked what it was. each of them was interested enough when i showed them…but they really perked up when they saw the checkbox on the back that says “imports data from qb.”
and then…when i told them that it brought over the entire transaction history…you’d have thought i’d just told them they won the lottery!
every one of them said:
what do we need to do to get a good look at this?
now…it’s important to keep in mind that i have trying to get just one of them interested in this since it was first announced, reminding them at every turn:
we need to look at this we need to look at this we need to look at this
and the reaction i got each time?
zip, zero, nada, nothing, zed (hi again susanne)
so heed my advice…if you want to get cpas interested in sba:
show them something tangible.
get them involved.
make it reasonable for them to support as practitioners.
listen to their feedback.
but…
don’t give them a sales pitch.
and…whatever you do…do not take the approach of:
look how much money you can make by selling this
any cpa worth their salt knows that they thrive by taking care of their clients first.
if they do that…the issue of money takes care of itself (well, almost).
that type of practitioner never thinks of clients as walking atms.
and in all likelihood such a practitioner will reject partnering with you if it sounds like you would think that way.
and…i’ll warn you now…if you do hook up with a cpa who thinks of their clients as slot machines…you’ll seriously regret it.
mark my words.

and nobody came?
in actuality, that is one of your friendly neighborhood happyfunboy’s biggest fears. spending the time and effort to plan something, and then…
nothing but crickets.
tomorrow night is the first meeting of the smb user group that marsha and i are trying to get started, and our expected attendance is rather small.
so your friendly neighborhood happyfunboy is now offering…a bounty.
that’s right…i said bounty!
read the terms:
if you are a visitor to the funcave who passes the word to somebody in the glorious state of alabama which results in that person being a new attendee, and we manage to have 5 folks (in addition to marsha and yours truly) tomorrow night…i hereby promise to post a picture…here at the funcave…of myself as your friendly neighborhood happyelvisboy.
for your to claim your bounty, the person you refer will need to, when i ask them how they found out about our group, simply reply with this code word:
ok you hellions…time to start hunting!

don adams, best-known as stupor-spy maxwell smart, passed away recently.
now…it seems like most bloggers are focusing on the gadgetry and screwball comedy of the classic spy-genre spoof get smart.
but i’d rather focus on something that i think was more revolutionary about the series: barbara feldon, and her portrayal of agent 99 as maxwell’s partner and (later) paramour.
tough and sweet, smart and devoted, and always dependable, 99 seemed a perfect meld of both the modern liberated woman and the devoted wife of previous generations.
obviously, not a super-sexy assassin like diana rigg’s emma peel from the just-as-classic avengers. but ms. peel always came off a bit cold for my taste.
ok, so maybe not that cold…
