mothership has a community technology preview aka ctp of device emulator 2.0 available.
in case you have all kinds of free time…
and nothing better to do.
remember tho…
the release to manufacturing aka rtm version of device emulator 2.0 won’t be available until the recently announced windows ce 6.0 release.
and as always…
ctp = heavy heavy beta still
so…
in all likelihood, you will hose your system by installing this software…
and i won’t take any blame whatsoever for you destroying your pc.
consider yourself warned.

no no no…
the funcave didn’t just become lifetime’s official blog.
straight from the good folks at the exchange team’s phenomenal blog comes the fantastic news that…
ms has released a standalone version of device emulator 1.0!
this is the same emulator that comes with visual studio. and the download also includes windows mobile 5 os images with msfp!
obviously, if you don’t have visual studio…
then this can be quite a handy tool for:
- assessing wm5 without committing to a service contract or hardware purchase
- demoing wm5 to prospects
- getting familiar with the new msfp features
so get it while it’s hot!
while you’re downloading tho…
don’t forget to grab the following mobile emulator support & dev files as well…
you could also grab the windows mobile 5.0 developer’s resource kit to get most of this in one single, albeit monolithic, download.
now, to be sure…
some of these other resources are specifically targeted for developers, and as such, may not work without a full-blown installation of visual studio.
but even if you aren’t a code monkey, they often have very helpful resources included which are applicable to everyone.
one caveat…
this emulator only simulates an arm-based device. so some processor specific software may not work on it.
still worth looking at, without a doubt.
just wish it had been out a couple of weeks ago. i sure could have used this during crown jewels #3…
would have been much easier than juggling two machines with a bum arm.

like all great boxing matches, this contest will be won by fundamentals.
windows mobile sets the tempo of this bout early by establishing a stinging jab with one simple feature…
the today screen
true, this is not a flashy feature…
nor is it a particularly new feature…
having been part of windows mobile since before windows mobile was even called windows mobile.
but i would argue that…
as the very first screen one sees on a windows mobile device…
the today screen vaults windows mobile to a huge lead in usability.
the today screen offers a stunning increase in productivity, if for no other reason than it gives you an immediate summary view of everything to which you need to give a bit of attention…
and also acts as a instant launch pad for accessing those very items…
no matter whether you need to jump to your calendar, your inbox, or your task list.
which is why it is even more amazing that the blackberry os does not offer a similar feature.
instead, you have to choose each application individually from the home screen if you use a blackberry os device.
if you want to a quick summary overview…
sorry…
you’re totally out of luck.
i’ll talk about some of this a bit more in the next round…
but for now…
