document everything.
the everyman’s guide should cover everything you need to know to get a good solid installation of wordpress.
so start from the beginning…
but document every single username, password, database instance, port number, whatever.
don’t argue with this…just do it.
you can thank me later.

wordpress maintains a fantastically comprehensive knowledgebase, which they have dubbed the codex.

just be sure that the info you get is applicable to the version of wordpress you are using.
the codex maintains info for previous versions of wordpress, so following a guide or information written for a 1.x version will, at best, be useless to a 2.x version…
but could, at worst, fubar your install.

just as simply put…

download everyman’s guide to wordpress installation.
and let’s have a round of applause for brandon booth, the author.
of course…
just downloading a guide does you absolutely no good unless you actually read it.
i followed that thing to the absolute letter…
even to the point of using filezilla as my ftp client, simply because that was the one in the guide…
and i was able to move my entire blog, with 300+ posts, in the space of less than 4 hours.
the cleanup took a bit longer to be sure.
but the site was live and rolling in the space of just a couple of hours of work.
and that simply kicks ass, no matter how you slice it.

simply put…
get wordpress!
perhaps it’s been best expressed by dr. codec…
wordpress spanks the llama!
but be sure to get the most recent stable release.
in other words…
non-beta.
as of the time of this posting, the most recent stable release of wordpress is 2.0.3, but you can always get the latest from wordpress.org/download.
of course, you can choose some other service…
but if you do, the relative value of this series will drop precipitously for you, as all the following posts will assume you are moving to wordpress.
also…we’re talking about hosting your own instance of wordpress, running under your own domain name, remember?
sure, you can just create a blog on wordpress.com…
but that would negate the whole previous point about tying your blog to your own name, right?
so be bold…
strike out on your own!

move to a reliable hosting provider, or don’t move at all.
there was no way in h-e-double-hockey-stick i was going to go to the trouble of moving the funcave, worry about dragging the regulars with me, all that…
just to end up somewhere that had even worse uptime than blogger.
your friendly neighborhood happyfunboy is unable to put into words how highly he recommends the good folks at own web now as a hosting provider.

the reliability of the new funcave has been nothing short of phenomenal. so rather than wasting time & money with jimmy joe bob’s 24 hour web hosting & beverage drive-thru…

go with someone who knows what they are doing & has the infrastructure, knowledge & resources committed to fully support your endeavors, commercial or otherwise.
