you might have noticed a few changes here at the funcave, particularly over there on the sidebar. i decided it was time to rip out some of the existing systems, particularly those which were more flash than anything else.
that’s right kiddos, say goodbye to our old pal…
r.i.p. funcave console
but i also decided it was finally time to quit hacking around with the sidebar.php file manually. so the robot horde bolted on a nifty new implant system called sidebar modules aka sbm.
the upgrade couldn’t have gone any smoother & now makes sidebar changes as easy as a few mouseclicks. the power & flexibility of wordpress continues to amaze me.
big huge thanks & a shoutout to lee kelleher, super-nice guy & the creator of the nifty category cloud widget for wordpress. lee was kind enough to help me get his widget working with sbm. kudos lee!
but the very best of the changes slated for the funcave is still yet to come!
stay tuned, kiddos…

normally, i don’t do callouts, especially on a fellow alabamian, but this one is causing all sorts of folks to waste all sorts of time smashing their heads against brick walls.
i can absolutely confirm that the instrux at kirupa.com are dead wrong. as was posted here at the funcave as soon as the windows mobile 6 sdks were released, using the sdks to run windows mobile 6 emulated unequivocally requires visual studio 2005 standard or higher to be installed.
so quit wasting your time on something that flat will not work.
but if you simply cannot wait…
the funcave may have something later today that will help you get your wm6 on now, rather than having to sit idly by, waiting for mothership to release standalone images.
fair warning: it’ll be for diehards only, that for sure.

If you’ve already installed the standalone version of Device Emulator 1.0, perhaps thanks to the Funlab 1.0 series, you should upgrade to DEmu 2.0 immediately.
Let me tell you why…

with the official release of device emulator version 2, it’s time to start a new index here at the funlab specifically for that release.
i’ll dispense with the preliminaries of why standalone device emulator is a godsend for non-developers. if you want to see that, you can read the preamble i cooked up for device emulator v1. suffice to say, that hasn’t changed one iota.

version 2 of microsoft’s amazing device emulator was just released as a standalone package yesterday.
that’s fantastic news, as v2 offers some marked improvements over device emulator v1. the top 2 improvements have to be:
- full support for windows vista
- full support for windows mobile 6
other words, network connectivity will finally work under vista with v2.
hoo-rah!
other changes include:
- ability to set additional options after boot
- much faster speed
- greatly enhanced rendering
even with all this tho, the really big news will come when standalone images of windows mobile 6 are released, much as the standalone images of wm5 were included with the standalone version of device emulator v1.
of course, if you own visual studio standard or higher, you can get all the emulated device goodness you want right now. heck…you’ve had it for months.
but this is still welcome news for all us non-code monkeys.
