size matters

it’s no wonder europeans, canadians & pretty much everybody else in the world thinks americans are arrogant.

forgot the insanely huge amount of physical space we, as american citizens, enjoy. of course, that does include all the vast desolate areas in places like north dakota, montana, wyoming & new jersey.

for example…

england, which has a slightly smaller area than the state of louisiana, has nearly double the population of texas. no wonder so many of them act like they have a stick shoved up their keister.

don’t even get me started on the myth of the us being the worst polluter in the world.

but anymore, i’m betting it’s also because we’re one of the few places left on earth that enjoys unlimited mobile data plans.

that’s right kiddos, we get to suck down all that sweet sweet data to our arthritis-inducing devices for one low monthly fee. file size be damned!

of course, the tradeoff is that our mobile networks are still basically using technology circa 1981. want the very best in mobile technology? move to asia.

even so, we’re pretty spoiled here in the u to the s to the a. and worrying about the size of the graphics here at the funcave was never something we spent any time thinking about.

but with the opening of the funboard, our official forums, and the attendant rise in page refreshes & content requests that are normally associated with a forum system, the robot horde decided it was way past time for us to start doing our part to lessen the impact of actually coming to any part of the funplex for our overseas visitors.

luckily for the funcave’s resident graphics ‘bot, pam (aka photo/graphics automaton manipulator), photoshop includes a handy little feature called save for web. using intelligent dithering, it can chop file sizes to anywhere between 1/3 to 1/10 the original size, with no discernible change in the image.

for a graphics-laden site like the funcave, that’s a serious chunk of bandwidth savings.

so for those of you coming in overseas, be it via mobile device or simply over a pc, all of us here at the funcave are doing our best not to unnecessarily run up your bandwidth costs anymore.
