Operation UK Suppression: Mission Accomplished

You made The British Bulldog cry!

If you live in the UK and try to load the freshly baked Office Mobile 6.1 update, which will give your Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device the ability to work with Word, Excel & PowerPoint documents saved in the native Office 2007 format, you might be in for a rude surprise.

The only English language version available for download is U.S.-specific. You may receive a language mismatch error when you try to load Office Mobile 6.1, which will prevent you from completing the installation.

In that case, to load the update, you’ll need to change your device language. Altho the actual language setting is found here…

Start->Settings->Regional Settings

The process you’ll need to use is a bit more involved…

  • Change device language to English (United States)
  • Restart device
  • Install Office Mobile 6.1
  • Restart device
  • Change device language back to English (United Kingdom)
  • Restart device

Yes, it’s a PITA. But it will work.

While I’m thinking about it…

This issue might also apply to all the other non-US English speaking locales, which would include…

  • Australia
  • Belize
  • Canada
  • Caribbean, mon
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • South Africa
  • Trinidad
  • Zimbabwe

Shout out if you happen to see this on your device, and you happen to be from one of those areas.

I’m trying to reproduce it now, but haven’t seen it yet. I’m not using true UK hardware tho.

  3. @ nadir…

Sorry. No direct replies except to my customers (as in, the people who put food on my table).

There won’t be an official WM6 updater for the JasJar. You could go the unofficial route, but you didn’t hear that from me.

If you want to stay away from pirate ROMs, you could try to snag an English version of the most recent WM5 ROM update for the JasJar from HTC (the device OEM) or i-Mate.
