The Family Von WESS

As part of the full court press release on Small Business Server 2008 today, SBS got inducted into the Windows Essential Server System AKA WESS family. Here’s how that family tree is laid out from smallest to largest…
- Small Business Server 2008 Standard
- Small Business Server 2008 Premium
- Essential Business Server 2008 Standard
- Essential Business Server 2008 Premium
For those of you who like pretty pictures…
And now for something with a bit of totally meaningless salesbunny text…
There’s something in both of those pics that should cause you to sit up and take notice. As the server graphics indicate, each progessive step in the WESS family tree splits more of the application load to separate boxes. We saw some of that in the previous post on SBS 2008, but only with SQL. Box split gets even better with EBS 2008. Here’s what I’m talking about…
- SBS 08 Standard
- Server 2008/AD/SharePoint/Exchange/Forefront/OneCare
- SBS 08 Premium
- Server 2008/AD/SharePoint/Exchange/Forefront/OneCare
- Server 2008/SQL 2008 Standard
- EBS 08 Standard
- Server 2008/AD/Networking/File-Print/System Center Essentials
- Server 2008/AD/Exchange 2007/Forefront
- Server 2008/Exchange 2007/ ISA Server NEXT
- EBS 08 Premium
- Server 2008/AD/Networking/File-Print/System Center Essentials
- Server 2008/AD/Exchange 2007/Forefront
- Server 2008/Exchange 2007/ ISA Server NEXT
- Server 2008/SQL 2008 Standard
Again, if you prefer pictures, here’s the detailed breakout graphic for SBS…
And here’s the one for EBS…
What’s most interesting to me, however, is something which I haven’t seen discussed yet. Namely, how virtualization fits into all this.
Here’s what I hope MS decides to do:
Server 2008 Core licenses, matching the respective number of physically disparate servers supported, included as part of all versions of SBS and EBS
Wow, that sure would make it simple, wouldn’t it?
That’s why it prolly won’t happen.
