The SP1 Of Silence

I can't hear you...I have a service pack in my ear!

Loaded Vista SP1 yet?

If not, be sure to load all available Windows Updates before starting. There have been a slew of driver updates released which you’ll prolly need for SP1.

Depending on the make of your audio hardware, you might have no sound after SP1 finishes. Specifically, you may see a speaker icon in your taskbar with a red X, which shows the error “No audio output device is installed” when you hover on it.

I specifically saw this issue on my own HP dv9005us, which uses Conexant audio hardware. But there have been reports of this kind of issue occurring on nearly every make under the sun, including Dell, Sony, Gateway, eMachines, Acer, etc.

Here’s a couple of steps to help resolve this:

  • Open Device Manager
  • Open Sound, video and game controllers
  • Right-click your audio device
  • Click Enable
  • Restart your machine

If you still don’t have audio, see if your audio device is showing an alert in Device Manager. If so, follow these steps:

  • Right-click your audio device and choose Uninstall
  • Check Delete the driver software for this device
  • Click OK
  • Click Scan for hardware changes
  • Re-install the audio driver for your audio device
  • Restart your machine

If that still doesn’t do it, you may need to check for an updated driver from the maker of your computer or audio device.
