The Black Screen Of Death

I got a letter this mornin what do you reckon it read?

Presenting the Mini-O-Death. Now with 2x the Death as before!

The totally wicked awesome HP Mini-Note with which I’ve been carrying on a complete hardware love affair suddenly gave up the ghost in the wee hours of the morning yesterday.

Very little warning. 2.5 days with some spontaneous reboots. Which, honestly…isn’t usually the first indicator of hardware death. Although they were Black Screens of Death. I guess Black is the new Blue.

Now, this unit was purchased in May, 2008.

That’s right… I said May. Gotta be some kind of record for premature hardware death.

Found a few other folks seeing this same issue over at the smokingly cool HP 2133 Guide.com forums. Which still doesn’t change the fact that I’m looking at a 2–5 day turnaround on the repair.

Bummer.

Here’s some White Stripes to make us all feel better.

Performing…what else? Son House’s masterpiece ‘Death Letter.’

It said the Mini you love is dead

  1. Probably not a good time to talk about dead Minis.

  26. My Hp 2133 is only a few months old and suddenly died and won’t power up any more. Blue power light comes on but nothing on screen, no sounds and orange wireless light will not come on.

I opened the laptop to check for loose connectors, etc and found that the processor, chipset and 3 surface mount resistors on the motherboard are what cause the laptop to heat up. The cooling fan still runs and these parts still heat up but the computer is otherwise dead. From my experience in the electronics industry I believe the motherboard has failed.

I was quite happy with this computer until it died but from reading similar posts from other people, I believe this computer is susceptible to motherboard failure (possibly due to overheating).

I would not recommend buying this computer due to the weak processor and history of premature motherboard failures.

  27. Hi All, this issue seem to be true my mini hp 2133 just went dead yesterday night, only the blue power light come’s on, this is a disater, I am sure the motherboard is dead as speculated due to over heating.

If there any way to fix this, I have got important data and need to recover this as soon as possible.

  28. Hey rollux,

Contact HP for a warranty fix for your Mini. Mine was fixed and return within 2-3 days.

The hard drive is fine. Since you mention needing the data right away, you could use an external SATA-to-USB adapter/harness to mount the hard drive after removing it and get access to the data you need right away. I bought an adapter for $30~40.

You should do remove and mount the hard drive anyway to grab a backup of the hard drive before you send the computer off, because HP will wipe the drive as a normal part of their repair depot procedures.

    Good luck man!

  36. My HP2133 just had the “Black Screen” of death this past weekend. Blue light on the “on” button is lit up, but nothing on the screen when I turn it on. I have had the HP 2133 since August 2009. Guess I’ll be sending it back to HP…..

    :(

  37. Mine died this evening, just been searching the net for possible fixes and found loads and loads of these kinds of threads. Now what can a mini mobo actually cost to produce ? $12,= assuming its made in china. And i read everywhere that HP tries to charge up to $ 500,= for replacing it !! Have HP gone bezerk ? I will write to HP to try and get some answers but if those answers are along the line of what i read sofar then this will be the last HP product i will ever buy !
