Running Antelope Responds To Response Point

Yes, it’s true.

Response Point 1, Running Antelope 0

Response Point will be spreading its voice-activated goodness all over the Funcave next month, thanks to the 100 unit set-aside promo offered exclusively to US SBSCs.

I received an e-mail yesterday evening from Jeff Smith, Senior Product Manager for RP, informing me that we’re slated to receive a system (pending receipt of the proper paperwork, naturally).

So when I told Running Antelope the news, including the estimated value, here was her response…

$2000!?! For a PHONE system!?!?!

That’s when I rolled the vids from the Response Point website for her.

You have to understand my wife’s approach to technology. Basically, she thinks of anything new as an invading army, out to attack her family and way of life, and therefore needs to be fought with all her might and strength of will.

Which is why she is such a helpful canary. I know that if something gets her attention at all, it’s really worth a second look.

After seeing the attendant features in action, she immediately declared…

WOW! That’s a heckuva lot cheaper than a virtual assistant, isn’t it?

Everything, and I mean everything, she does involves the phone. So anything that will make her more efficient? Instant acceptance. No resistance.

Her second reaction, after letting what she saw percolate?

I sure wish we’d had something like that when we first started.

Exactly, my dear.

The war isn’t over. Not by a long shot. But getting her to be receptive to even trying it? That bodes well.

Expect all kinds of writeup action here at the Funcave. There will be lots and lots of info, and prolly a whole new Funlab series. 5.x, to be exact.

Home Sweet Server

Being interviewed about Windows Home Server revealed one simple, beautiful fact to folks who were paying attention.

To answer them…

Yes, WHS is live and kicking, right here at the Funcave.

Well, the Funlab to be precise. I haven’t seen the robot horde this excited since the local Servo-Mart had a 3–for-1 sale on Ultra Chem 20W-50.

So what does that mean for you?

A brand-new multi-part FUNLAB, that’s what! FUNLAB 4.x, to be exact

Yeah yeah, I know. FUNLAB 2.x hasn’t been finished yet. And FUNLAB 3.x has yet to even start.

Ah well…there’s no stopping the robot horde, at least where WHS is concerned.

And I’ll tell ya…

I managed to get the tech hand on WHS for a good bit of time myself. I’d rather keep the final verdict under wraps a bit, but I’ll give you this hint…

Do I have a sign on my lawn that says

You might as well start sharpening up your katana now.

DEmu 3.0… Now In Ultramax 3-D!

The Shock! The Awe! The Soiled Undergarments!

OK, not really.

But you can get your hands on Device Emulator 3.0, right now. It’s included in the Beta 2 release of Visual Studio 2008, available now from those crazy kids over at MSDN.

They should have codenamed VS2008 “Baskin Robbins,” cuz it’s available now in roughly 31 flavors. Included are a couple of handy-dandy VPC images, so you don’t have to dirty up your machine any.

It’s a hefty download, to be sure. The Professional version weighs in at 3.2 GB. Something to keep in mind if your Internet bandwidth runs like a taxi meter.

Yes, there will be a FUNLAB 3.x, on DEmu 3.0. Prolly before FUNLAB 2.x, on DEmu 2.0, is finished.

But that’s OK. I’m just happy to see the WiMo juggernaut roll on!

My Treo’s Quiet. Too Quiet.

There’s a patch out for the Treo 750.

FREEBIRD! WOOOOOOOO!!!!

No…it’s not that kind of patch.

It’s also NOT the Windows Mobile 6 update we’re all waiting for.

This patch is an audio driver update to resolve an error condition where the Treo can go completely and utterly silent.

I personally haven’t seen this issue, but I’m also not going crazy rocking the audio features on mine.

A few things to note on this one:

  • Not a data wiping patch, but always a good idea to sync/backup your device data anyhow
  • Hard resetting your 750 will require you to reload this patch
  • Gotta load this patch from a memory card

BTW: Here’s a quibble. Why is the 750 called a Smartphone on Palm’s website? It’s technically a Pocket PC, when applying the simple test I outlined in my previous post.

Bypassing Windows Mobile Security

Here's the lock. And here's the key.

The #1 thing I am asked all the time by developers regarding Windows Mobile has to be (I’m paraphrasing):

How do I unlock this !%#$* thing so I can load and test my developed applications on it!?!?!

Here’s the short answer…

Security Configuration Manager, which is included as part of the Windows Mobile 6 SDK, allows you to set security policies as part of your development and testing procedure.

MSDN has scads of info on it, obviously. Here’s a decent starting point.

Security Configuration Manager is slated to appear in the Funlab 2.x series, as SCM supports both emulated and real (unlocked) devices.

There’s also a standalone PowerToy available for WM2003/5 devices, which you can download here.
