Sorry for the long long delay in getting this info posted up here.
I know that I announced to all the attendees at the NOLA conference that the survey would be posted by EOD. Unfortunately, some unforeseen logistical snafus kept me from getting this posted during the conference itself.
Here’s the dealio…
I cooked up a short survey about the Mobility talk I delivered at the SBSmigration.com conference in New Orleans this week. It would REALLY help in some key ways (which I’ll talk about later in this post) for EVERYONE who attended the Mobility session to please please PLEASE fill this out.
It should be quick quick quick. As in, it should take you less than a minute or 2 to fill out.
It’s available on the demo SharePoint site I used in my Mobility talk. So, as an added bonus, you get to see yet another example of a kickass way you can use SharePoint for and with your customers.
You can start the survey by clicking on this…
Mobility Survey
And yes, you will quickly notice the survey’s got that Chris Rue kinda flavor, just like the session had. Being a semi-professional smart aleck isn’t something you can just turn on and off.
Check out the screenshot…

Couple of things…
- Please fill out the survey completely.
- 10 is a GREAT number. Feel free to use that one liberally

- Please please please take just a moment or 2 and put some actual words in the final comment section. If you thought the Mobility session rocked, please say something to that effect. If you’d like to see more stuff on Mobility at other conferences, please SAY that as well.
- Be SURE to click FINISH, or your feedback answers won’t be recorded.
Also, if you didn’t get a chance to get or let me know that you wanted either the Windows Mobile Enterprise Resource Kit (ERK) and/or Developers Resource Kit (DRK) discs I had at the conference, please indicate your preference at the end of the survey. Also please put your e-mail address (this is required if you want to receive discs). I promise not to spam you, or share that info with anyone else.
One goofy caveat: Yes, I know the session was all about Mobility and mobile device stuff and how much SharePoint kicks ass with Windows Mobile. Unfortunately, you must use a PC to fill out this survey, as surveys in SharePoint3 do not support mobile views. Another feature request for the dev team, obviously.
Thanks in advance for your patience, and for taking just a couple of moments to fill out the survey.

Today’s the day, kiddos.
I’m already in the glorious swampland known as Louisiana and putting the finishing touches on my presention about Mobility in SMB.
The gloves are coming off, and it’s being recorded for posterity.
Here’s hoping I don’t fall on my posterior, and that everything’s real horrorshow.
Wish me luck!

It’s official.
The Funboard AKA the FB has been permanently shuttered. This would be the official notice. Not planning to send anything about the closing via e-mail to any of the 650+ folks who registered for the FB, let alone its 17,000+ anonymous visitors.
Certain info may make it out of the wreckage, but no promises.
Were I someone else, I would prolly go on a long-winded rant about community, selling out, apathy, etc. But in the end, to be honest, community is a funny funny thing. Just as passion about something usually starts with just a couple of folks, so too does apathy. And where folks don’t see value…well, there’s no reason for them to be there.
Quite frankly, combine that with the disturbing lack of disclosure that’s been so evident lately…
I’m sick to the death of most of what I’m seeing. More than most of it, actually. So color me apathetic. Which means that maybe it’s catching?
Hoo-rah.

Even as far back as 1990, I said Willem Dafoe would have made the best Joker. I still believe that.
And if you’d ever seen him in Streets of Fire as Raven Shaddock, the maniacal leader of the Bombers…you’d believe it too.
But Ledger as The Joker would run a very close second.

One thing that stood out from the Server 2008 launch today was a small, but key, enhancement regarding virtualization rights under Windows Server 2008 Standard.
Under Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard, the license permitted the following…
A single Standard Edition license server permits you to run one instance of the software in either a physical or virtual OSE on that server. You need to assign a Standard Edition license for each running instance (in which case you may want to choose a higher level edition).
The key word is the or in the first sentence separating the words physical and virtual, which means if you want to virtualize a copy of Server 2003 R2 Standard, you still have to pony for the host OS.
With Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, the license was much more liberal…
An Enterprise Edition license grants the right to run one Enterprise server in one physical OSE and up to four simultaneous virtual OSEs. If you run all five permitted instances at the same time, the instance of the server software running in the physical OSE may only be used to run hardware virtualization software and software to manage and service the OSEs on the server.
Most people get all hung up on the 4 instances, but the real benefit here is that the licensing for the host OS is included in Enterprise.
Since Microsoft has already publicly stated that Server 2008 Standard includes the ability to run 1 physical instance and 1 virtual instance, I see that as meaning Server 2008 Standard will have the same rights as Enterprise, but with a 1:1 P-V ratio, as opposed to the 1:4 P-V of Enterprise. As such, I’d fully expect the physical instance of Server 2008 Standard…
May only be used to run hardware virtualization software and software to manage and service the OSEs on the server.
Now, here’s hoping those selfsame rights will extend to Small Business Server 2008 too. Especially Premium Edition.
Any and all Microsoft folks with the authority to do so should consider this an open invitation to confirm or refute this post…
Which is tagged as an opinion, in case you’re wondering.
